A building that has served generations of East Austin residents received formal recognition this month, adding a new chapter to a history that reaches back to World War II.

Austin City Council designated Doris Miller Auditorium a historic landmark on October 8, according to the parks department’s October 9 announcement.

The auditorium stands at 2300 Rosewood Avenue in Rosewood Neighborhood Park, where its community role is part of the story behind the designation.

A gathering place with a wartime origin

Rosewood opened in 1929 as a segregated park for Black Austinites, and its wartime recreation activities served Black military personnel who faced restricted access elsewhere.

A dedicated USO recreation building opened there on April 10, 1944.

The facility was later named for Doris “Dorie” Miller, the Waco-born Navy cook awarded the Navy Cross for heroism during the Pearl Harbor attack.

The city identifies the building’s architectural features and its long record of cultural and civic use as important parts of its significance.

A park that remains active

Landmark recognition does not turn the surrounding recreation complex into a place whose story exists only in the past.

The current recreation-center information lists youth sports, teen activities, adult and older-adult programs, arts activities and community events across the Rosewood facilities.

Doris Miller Auditorium is listed as a venue for youth and adult sports, fitness activities and Notes 4 Notes.

The adjoining complex also includes recreation buildings, a pool, a splash pad and outdoor space.

Those services show why it is useful to understand the site as both a historic place and a working neighborhood resource.

What visitors should check

The recreation-center listing gives shared operating hours for Delores Duffie Recreation Center and Doris Miller Auditorium of 11 a.m.–9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Friday, with Saturday and Sunday listed as closed.

Program schedules, rentals and special events can have their own arrangements, so confirm the activity you intend to attend before driving over.

The listed auditorium phone number is 512-978-2490.

For families exploring Austin from Round Rock, checking access and choosing a specific program is more useful than assuming landmark status means a new museum exhibition or a drop-in tour.

No new exhibition or special public tour is announced in the designation release.

The recognition joins history to an existing community space, rather than replacing the site’s recreation role.

The city’s archived photograph accompanying this story depicts an earlier era, while the exterior image identifies the local building itself.
